Green Bay Packers are going for #13

By Matt Ryan

2008 was not the best season for the Green Bay Packers, but only because they didn't make it to the Super Bowl. The Packers are an exceptional team who always provides their fans with amazing plays and solid entertainment. Even with quarterback woes, last season, fans quickly bought up tickets and showed up for every game. This season - 2009 - is expected to be much better, more of a typical Green Bay Packer season.

The Green Bay Packers have been around since 1919, and first started playing on the field of the Green Bay Press Gazette. Another company, by the name of the Indian Packing Company, was responsible for the purchase of the team's jerseys and was the inspiration behind the teams' name. They have come a long way, from playing on a small company field to playing in national championship games!

Their first couple years of play were so good that they quickly captured the attention of private sponsors who worked at the Gazette. After a few years with the sponsors, the Packers were quickly franchised into the NFL for their professional career! Ticket sales, for the first 10 years, were tough. This had nothing to do with a lack of fans; it was strictly due to financial hardships that thousands were facing.

Hard to believe considering that, now, tickets are impossible to come by. Fans are proud of the numerous titles the Packers hold along with the 21 Football Hall of Fame members that have come from the team - a mix of players and coaches. Everyone, including those sheltered from sports, has heard the names Vincent Lombardi, Bart Starr, Willie Davis, Ray Nitschke, or even Brett Favre - all of which came from the Packers.

The Green Bay Packers quickly started winning championship titles; by 1931, they had three to proudly display in the locker room. Once the NFL incorporated playoff games, the Packers quickly snatched up nine more titles. This team is the only team to have won three titles three years in a row, and to make things better they have done it twice.

Three of their Super Bowl championship titles were won in 1966, 1967, and again in 1996. When comparing titles, players, coaches, and many other pertinent factors, the Packers rate as one of the top teams in the NFL and they will continue to hold this slot as long as they play.

Green Bay Packers fans are known as cheese heads simply because of the team's hometown. These fans are some of the most loyal throughout the sport, and they will continue their legendary status by following and supporting the team through the many ups and downs that are likely to come. There is no doubt, over the last 50 years that tickets to Green Bay Packers games are limited, if they can be found at all and this will not change anytime soon.

The Packers are welcoming a new free agent - Anthony Smith - this season. He played a major role in bringing his last team in Pittsburgh to the championship in 2008; players, coaches, and fans expect nothing less from him this year. There is no doubt, with the teams skill and the excitement of new blood, that the Green Bay Packers will trample over many of their foes this season! - 16887
