Mountain Biking In Alaska

By Patricia J Williams

Biking in Alaska isnt for the faint of heart. Theres wildlife to contend with, high altitudes that can make any task seem daunting, and more natural obstacles then you can imagine. However, there is also some of the most incredible scenery as well as a challenging ride to be enjoyed.

First up, for beginners just dipping their toes into the 49th state is Eklutna Lake Trail. It's a 14 mile path that goes most of the way around a beautiful mountain lake; you'll be riding through spruce and birch wood forests and rolling alpine meadows. Warning - it's at high elevation, so you'll get winded more often, and the area is still pretty wild - watch out for bears, but do bring your camera.

A slightly more challenging trail is the Gull Rock trail, near Hope. This is a 10 mile track with some large boulders and roots that you may need to port your bike past, but otherwise, it's a nice, gentle ride. It's best before the height of summer, as it gets overgrown later in the year.

The Centenial Park from Muldoon to Stuckagain is located near Anchorage. There many trails to choose from in this 12-mile section of track. Because of the good variety of trails, theres something here for any skill level. A few things you might want to check out during your ride: the Ship Creek dam and reservoir and an old rope swing off the hill. There is a military training camp near North Muldoon so be careful in this area.

The Hilltop Ski Area is also located near Anchorage. It is 9 miles of steep climbs, but for every climb, there is an awesome descent! As with many trails in Alaska, you have to be alert for wildlife. You also need to watch out for hikers or horseback riders. Even though most of the main trails are quite technical and rocky, there are some side trails suitable for less experienced riders.

The Resurrection Pass Trail near Hope, Alaska is for the biker with endurance. It is a wooded 40-mile track at a high elevation. There are steep, technical sections, as well as some challenging downhill areas. Watch out for rocks, roots, and mud as they can be hazardous. Because of the length and remoteness of the trail, always bring plenty of water, first aid supplies, and always ride with a friend or two. There are places to camp in the area, but keep an eye out for bears.

Going a little farther north to the Matanuska-Susitna valley is Silver Creek Trail, outside of Wasilla. Mostly for ATVs, the trail is 4 miles of challenging course, that will take you over the tree line. It's got a great view, but keep an eye out for inclement weather; like in the Rockies, weather can change fast.

If you're an adventurous mountain biker, Alaska is a state full of challenges for you. Expect the ride of a lifetime! - 16887
