The camping lantern is not something people usually talk about. When you do get the chance though, the lantern you are referring to probably will fall under one of the four categories. In any order these are the categories. - Battery - Gas - Liquid Fuel - Candle
Liquid fuel includes the kerosene fuel. There is also the gas camping lantern. You need to carry around canisters or connect your lantern to a gas bottle for these types. This can be cumbersome and/or not very portable but you get a very bright light from it.
The battery lantern includes the normal battery one as well as solar powered and cranking ones. These can be very economical and worry free, except for when you need to buy throw away batteries.
If you want to buy a camping lantern then you have to think about the stores that would carry these. Well, no you do not actually because I have done the thinking for you. Big stores that carry almost everything will have a camping lantern. Hardware stores or kmart might also. Adventure stores will definitely have the range of camping lanterns so that you can make the best purchase.
Before you head off to the store, make sure you have a price in mind and do not exceed it, or try very hard not to. Hopefully and if you are lucky enough a big chain store might be having a sale and you can get a quality camping lantern for a great price.
You may think that it is funny to put Kmart down here as an option but they really do sell almost anything and the camping lantern is one thing they do sell. You can find a quality product here and the pricing is pretty good too and they might be easier to find than the other kinds of stores.
Any other type of hobby store that involves going outside for the activity and staying overnight will have a camping lantern for you. An example of this is fishing. These type of stores also sell quality and cheap camping lantern.
