The Beginnings of Aikido

By Rhys Jones

The name 'Aikido' is created by the permutation of three characters in the Japanese language. 'Ai', which means 'joining'; 'ki', which means 'spirit' and 'do', which signifies 'way'. These three characters actually sum up the essence of Aikido as a type of martial art: 'the joining of the spirit to find the way'. It was only in the period from 1930's to the 1940's that the name Aikido was legally accepted as the name of this martial art variety.

Aikido uses methods that do not seriously injure or kill not like different types of martial art. The movements and skills being taught are just intended to divert attention or immobilize attackers. This is perhaps the explanation why most people prefer Aikido, because of its concentration on peace and tranquility as opposed to violence and conflict. In deed, Aikido teacher, Morihei Ueshiba, believes that to have power over hostility without causing any injury is the art of peace.

Ueshiba, who is also called Osensei, which signifies 'Great Teacher', created Aikido from the doctrine of Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu. He incorporated the ways of the 'yari', the spear; the 'juken', the bayonet; and the 'jo', which is a short quarterstaff. But what ultimately separates Aikido from other kinds of martial art is the fact that its practitioners can strike while empty-handed. Practitioners need no weaponry for their protection.

As a young child, he was greatly into physical fitness and conditioning. This was because of his oath to avenge his father's attackers. Eventually, his studies and actions brought him to the discipline of the various martial arts. He studied several of them. He even has qualifications for fencing, fighting with spears, etc. He has learned it all. This is perhaps the reason why Aikido is such a disparate and multi-disciplinary form of martial art.

Yet in spite of his skill, he remained discontented. He felt that there was still something missing. It was then that he turned to the religions. He studied under a spiritual leader, Onisaburo Deguchi of the sect named Omoto-kyo in Ayabe. Deguchi taught him to take care of his psychic growth. He then combined his spiritual beliefs and his mastery of the different martial arts and Aikido was born.

His relationship with this fascinating spiritual leader Deguchi also paved the path for his introduction to the elite political and military personnel as a martial artist. Because of this association, he was able to launch Aikido and even pass on his knowledge to students, who have, in turn, developed their own methods and movement in Aikido.

Aikido is a combination of the different styles of jujitsu as well as some of the ways of sword and spear fighting, of which Ueshiba was an expert. To get an general idea, Aikido combines the joint locks and throws of jujitsu and the techniques of the body necessary when fighting with swords and spears.

Oriental in origin, it was brought to the West by Minoru Mochizuki when he visited France in 1951. He introduced the Aikido methods to students who were studying judo. In 1952, Tadashi Abe came to France as the official Aikikai Honbu spokesperson. Then in 1953, Kenji Tomiki toured throughout the United States while Koichi Tohei stayed in Hawaii for a full year where he set up a dojo. Aikido then widened its influence in the United Kingdom two years after and in 1965, it reached Germany and Australia. At present, Aikido has centres all over the world. - 16887

Men, Get Rid of Beer Belly While Still Drinking Beer!

By Dorthy Weatherbush

Men are you annoyed with hearing about how flat your stomach once was and how you can barely see your feet underneath it? If so, I want to let you know that all that can change. I can show you how to get rid of your beer belly, and what's better, without giving up the beer! But let's first discuss what a beer belly really is and what causes it.

Let us first define what a beer belly is. By definition, a beer belly is an area of fat that is positioned between your chest and your waist, or what used to be your waist. Now, is it cause by beer? The surprising answer is no. Science has proven that beer bellies are caused by calories that haven't been burned up by your body that get deposited to that section of your body. Why is it deposited there? Men are genetically dispositioned to deposit the greatest amount of their fat in their stomach area.

Now you know where the beer belly or should I say the hot wings belly comes from, next you have to decide what you are willing to do to reverse the curse. You can start by working on those fat cells that are spreading themselves on your stomach. Beer is not the direct cause of your waistline expanding, but it can be a factor. Alcohol makes you hungry, think Hot wings and Beer at Hooters (I mean the food is why you go, right?), so if you stopped drinking youd be taking a good step towards cutting down your calorie intake.

Lose the beer and you can also lose that increased appetite. But this article isn't about getting rid of the beer; it's about getting rid of the belly, so I won't tell you to stop drinking. You could also exercise and burn more calories than the amount of calories you take in from drinking beer. But exercise too may sound like a lot of hard work. So for the purposes of this article, we will focus on the best beers for your belly!

So the first thing that comes to your mind when I say low calories is all those light beers that taste likewell you know, but How to Get Rid of the Beer Belly without Giving Up Beer is for real men who would never think of ordering one of "them there sissy light beers."

First on the list is a nice and dark Guiness Draught, with 125 calories and 10 carbohydrates; this is no light beer but it is low on calories and you don't have to drink tons of them to make up for a lack in taste. Second on the list is Beamish Irish Stout, with 131 calories and it's still full of flavor all while making your waist happy. Third on the list is Busch, with 133 calories and about 10 carbohydrates. So drink responsibly and get rid of that belly!

Now you know what you can do to get rid of that beer belly without getting rid of the beer. As a matter of fact, the next time your wife or girlfriend or your mother tells you to get from in front of the television and lose some weight, go to the fridge, grab yourself a cold one and tell her you're working on it right now! - 16887

Why Is Karate Effective For Self-Defense

By Jim Steward

Karate is known to been an effective form of marital arts, so why is it so and what moves are there that we can learn today to get an idea of its effectiveness? First off, you should know that karate was originally developed by ordinary farming folks in Okinawa, Japan. Tired of being attacked and pillaged by armed bandits. These people took it upon themselves to develop a form of empty-handed combat which were effective against these mounted raiders.

Weapons were forbidden to be carried by the common Japanese folks if they were not samurai or the warrior class. This is one of the main reasons why you see flying or high kicks in karate. It was due to the necessity in knocking off these bandits or warriors from their horses.

Now what are some of the moves we can analyze that shows the effectiveness of these karate moves? Among the many moves, there are some common effective ones, like the back hand lash, the bottom fist, side hand hammer blow and choker.

Lets take a quick look at these. The back hand lash was one of the original attack moves in karate and how it is done is that when an opponent comes at you, you lash out with your palms straightened and tightened. It works like a plank of wood being smashed against the enemy's ribs.

For the bottom fist it is delivered best against an enemy that is wearing amour. In the olden days, most warriors wore some form of armor. What this meant was that normal killing blows to the soft vulnerable spots were not feasible. Hence this move was created to smash against hard armor, thereby creating concussion effects on the enemy. Hitting it on the head is effective as it can disorient and even knock out the enemy.

Another move sometimes used by karate practitioners is the heel of palm attack. As the name implies, your striking surface is the heel of the palm. This is powerful for several reasons. If delivered correctly and with connection power, the blow can be devastating to the opponent and can knock them out pretty quick. - 16887

Simple Men's Toega Slip On Facts and Details

By Marcus Myers

The Simple Men?s Toega slip on is made of 100% organic cotton, making it a fan favorite among those concerned with the well-being of our environment.

Perhaps the main selling point for the Simple Men?s Toega slip on is the fact they make 100% sustainable shoes. People don?t want to just have to listen to the hype, they want the proof before buying. The Simple brand gives the consumer that.

If you are not one of the most environmentally conscious people in the world, there are other reasons why you might like the Simple Men?s Toega slip on.

To start, the Simple Men?s Toega slip on is a pretty cheap shoe in price. They will vary all around the internet, but usually you can find them right around 60 dollars or less.

Also, these shoes are one of the most comfortable ones I have every worn. Granted, I?ve only had one pair, but they were great.

It does take a few days to get used to the textured sole on the bottom of the Simple Men?s Toega slip on, but once you are it?s great. If you have flat feet, these still work great.

The shoes selling point does go back to the eco-friendliness of the Simple Men?s Toega slip on. They contain no animal parts, and they are free of any man-made chemicals.

There are plenty of suppliers who advertise these shoes for great prices, so my best advice is to find the style you want and then search for a great price. Good luck! - 16887

Packers Shut Out Lowly Lions

By Ross Everett

The Green Bay Packers didn't do a good job protecting their quarterback last Sunday, but against the lowly Detroit Lions it didn't really matter. Packers' QB Aaron Rodgers was sacked five times, but Green Bay used a big first half offensive outburst to coast to a 26-0 NFL victory over the Detroit Lions. Rodgers threw two first half touchdown passes which was complimented by four Mason Crosby field goals as Green Bay improved to 3-2 on the season. The Lions slumped to 1-5 with the loss.

NFL football betting enthusiasts who backed the Packers as -14 home dogs easily cashed their tickets with Green Bay's third pointspread cover in five games. Detroit slipped to 2-4 against the spread.

In the victory, Packers' receiver Donald Driver passed Sterling Sharpe for first place on the franchise reception list. Sharpe finished his career with 596 receptions, Driver now has 602. After the game, he talked about the accomplishment:

"It couldn't it come in a better place -- at home in front of the fans I've played in front of for so many years. It feels good. Now I just have to wait on Sterling to call me and congratulate me."

Despite the convincing victory, cornerback Tramon Williams wasn't happy with the relatively narrow margin:

"It feels like a 50 to zero game, but we didn't quite get there. I felt we should've put more points on the board."

For the Lions, their quarterback woes continued. Matthew Stafford is already out indefinitely with an injured knee, and against Green Bay backup Daunte Cullpepper injured his hamstring in the third quarter and was replaced by the Lions' third string quarterback Drew Stanton. Cullpepper is now listed as 'questionable' on the official NFL injury report. After the game, he talked about Detroit's lack of offense:

"It's very disappointing, very frustrating. It's embarrassing to me not to be able to move it on the field and get points on the board. We've got to figure out a way to do that, simple as that."

The Packers will play on the road this Sunday, heading to Cleveland to face the Browns. Green Bay will host the Minnesota Vikings the following Sunday followed by a trip to Tampa Bay on November 8. Detroit has a bye this weekend and will return to action as they host the St. Louis Rams on November 1. They'll play their next two on the road, with games in Seattle and Minnesota. - 16887

Why Is It People Don't Fall Out of Roller Coasters at the Amusement Park?

By Andrea Smith

Why do we "stick" to the roller coaster cars as they go upside down in a loop? Because of gravity. Why do we "stick" to the earth rather than float upwards? Because of gravity. It sounds weird, but it's true.

A coaster loop isn't actually circular. In a perfectly circular loop the radius is constant. It is more of a teardrop shape that is called "clothoid," a spiral in which the radius changes constantly. But in a clothoid loop, the radius at the bottom is larger than the radius at the top. It's much the same shape as a standard helium balloon.

If a roller coaster loop were circular, to have enough speed to hold the cars to the track as they loop over would require 8 g's of acceleration as you go into the loop. Fighter pilots black out when they experience 7 or more g's, so this would clearly be dangerous to the human body. There have been a couple of cases of designers trying to include perfectly round loops. One was not a coaster, but an enclosed water slide in a New Jersey park called Action Park. It was only open for about a month in 1985 and for only a few days in 1995, but both times there were enough bloody noses and back injuries that it was clear that the ride could not remain open.

To avoid the problems of excessive g forces, coaster (and water slide) designers make the loops in a clothoid shape. The rider feels the greatest speeds at the bottom of the loop, both entering and exiting. The rider's lowest speed in the loop is at the top of the loop. This way, the forces are 3 or 4 g's, which are exciting, but not dangerous.

A further way to look at it is that it is the inertia keeping you from falling out of the roller coaster. This is what presses your body to the outside of the loop as the cars go through the loop. Gravity is still pulling you down to the ground, but at the top of the clothoid loop, the acceleration pulling upward is much stronger than gravity. - 16887

By simply double-checking, you can set your mind at ease and be positive that your purchase will function without a headache.

If you are purchasing karaoke cd discs and dvds for the first time, make sure you pick the ones that you know will be utilized. While most individuals would like to have a full library that embraces all music styles and musical genres, it can become superfluous to buy a number of tracks that you have no interest in ever singing.

It is smarter to hunt for karaoke disks that have what you are searching for. In this aspect ascertain that your purchase will be put to good use instead of just collecting dust. Notwithstanding if you are somebody who is incessantly throwing karaoke events or inviting acquaintances over to enjoy your karaoke system, please ascertain that your titles comprises a massive spectrum of best-selling karaoke songs.

There is nothing bad in having your personalized collection that is suited specifically to your tastes, but if you are a massive fan of country and your acquaintances completely loves the blues, it will cause your party to be a little lacklustre.

Eventually, what you have to keep in mind when determining what karaoke CDs and DVDs you are buying is what you will get the most enjoyment out of. Visiting Tigers Shock Hurricanes In Overtime

By Ross Everett

The Clemson Tigers used a touchdown pass on their first possession of overtime to upset the Miami Hurricanes 40-37 on Saturday night to cap a back and forth game. Miami kicked a field goal on their first possession of overtime to take the lead, but Clemson responded with a seldom used play on third and 11 to get the victory as quarterback Kyle Parker completed a 27 yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Ford. Clemson improved to 4-3 with the win while Miami slipped to 5-2.

College football betting devotees who backed Clemson as +4 road underdogs eventually cashed their tickets, but they definitely earned their money in a game that saw twelve lead changes and two ties. Clemson improved to 5-2 against the spread with the cover, while Miami dropped to 4-3 against the money. The 77 combined points sailed OVER the posted total of 43. It was only Miami's second OVER of the season against four UNDER verdicts while Clemson has gone OVER in three of their seven games.

After the game, Jacoby Ford explained his logic for suggesting the surprise play in the huddle:

"We knew this game was going to come down to who made more plays. And we did."

Miami has a history of winning when their offense is clicking-this loss was only the second in 115 games when the Hurricanes score 37 or more points dating back to 1985.

For his part, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is glad this one is over:

"I have a birthday next month and I think I'm going to turn 50 instead of 40. We had to put on Superman capes. We made plenty of mistakes that could have lost us the game, but they played with poise and confidence. We just kept battling."

CJ Spiller was also a big factor for the Tigers as he set a school record with 310 all purpose yards including a 90 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He also added 81 yards rushing and 104 yards receiving with a 56 yard touchdown catch.

Clemson QB Parker suggested that last week's win over Wake Forrest was a turning point for his team:

"I think last week we realized that we could be really good and this week we acted on it. I thought we really got some explosive plays and we played well."

Miami's quarterback Jason Harris sounded a different tone in his postgame comments:

"This has to be my toughest loss here. We fought so hard throughout the game as a team and didn't come out with the victory. We let Clemson outwork us, we turned the ball over too much -- little things that made us get to this point."

Clemson will host FCS foe Coastal Carolina next Saturday before resuming ACC play the following week at home against Florida State. They'll travel to North Carolina State on November 14. Miami plays two of their next three on the road, starting next weekend at Wake Forest. They'll face the University of Virginia at home the next week before traveling to Chapel Hill for a game against North Carolina on November 14. - 16887

The Pros And Cons Of Giving Ribbons To Children

By Connor Sullivan

Sports medals: a good or bad idea in kids' sports? Most kids' sports these days award medals or custom ribbons to teams that excel. Many children have a bedroom lined with rows of medals and ribbons. They may be hung on the wall or shown off in special cases. The children may wear special uniforms and tee-shirts. These things are a symbol of pride and accomplishment. But is awarding medals and ribbons a good thing for children?

On the "yes" side is the pride and motivation that children feel when they are recognized as winners. Kids who might play half-heartedly might play just a little harder and work to improve their skills if there is a reward for success. They might practice more and take their place on the team more seriously if they know that they will receive a tangible symbol of their skill. If the child's goal is to win an athletic scholarship, a roomful of awards is one tool for reaching this goal.

However, I can make arguments for the "no" side. First, games kids play should be played for fun. We want every child to play sports so that they get sufficient exercise and develop a strong, healthy body. But consider the kids who lack natural ability. In a formal sports program, they will have a hard time and are less likely to be a star. When they see the other kids walking away with trophies and ribbons, they may come to see themselves as no good at sports or as losers. Feeling discouraged, they will be more likely to drop the sport and take up computer games. If kids get together and play casual games just because it's fun, more kids are likely to be included.

Another objection to sports awards for kids, particularly in the academic setting, is that the athletes are raised above the other students. The sports stars are the school heroes, the popular kids, the "good catches." There are other kids who excel at what they are good at, but they may not get the recognition that the athletes get. The group that comes to mind is the academic achievers. In many schools, it's cool to be athletic, but it's not cool to be good at studying. Many smart kids try to keep their lights under a bushel so that their classmates don't call them "nerds," "brainiacs," or "suck-ups." On the other hand, the athletes wear special sweaters and jackets that proclaim their excellence. This objection would just go away if schools would recognize scholars the way they do athletes and if the attitude that people who excel academically are "elitists" went away.

So, which side wins: the "for" or the "against"? In my opinion, anything we can do to interest kids in sports is a good thing. Trophies, medals, and ribbons are strong motivators. Kids respond when their success is recognized by increasing their effort. But we need to keep the negatives in mind and work to overcome them so that all kids can achieve an equal sense of accomplishment for the things that they do well - 16887

Why You Should Get An Inflatable Water Trampoline

By Jeery Mcqwire

Often people confuse a water trampoline with a water bouncer. A water trampoline utilizes a jumping area that is upheld by a steel frame and springs but a water bouncer has webbing instead of springs. The webbing is connected to the jumping surface via a flotation tube.

You can of course bounce higher on the water trampoline which also can take on a greater weight than the water bouncer. A water trampoline may naturally take about thirty minutes more than a water bouncer for setting up and cost more but it's well worth all the fun.

You may have seen regular trampolines at international contests, in circuses and at fares. But now you can join a growing club of people who are using the simpler version of the regular trampoline for homes. Water trampolines are being bought for both the fun and exercise they can provide for the whole family.

Regular trampolines occupy more space because of the large steel frames but water trampolines are inflatable and can easily be stowed away in the house. Water trampolines have become very popular at gyms and schools. You can get a good cardio workout session with the water trampoline too.

When buying a water trampoline check out the diameter that can best suit the price you can afford for your home water trampoline. Usually, water trampolines in the 9 feet to 12 feet diameter are ideal for any family. Check out the climbing platform and see if it can be easily used by the kids and adults. There are several accessories that can be added to your water trampoline like slides, tents, bouncing boards and even a side basketball stand.

Water trampolines can be easily bought off the Internet but ensure that you do so from a reputed seller. Do not get taken in by luring advertisements and shop for water trampolines only at secure sites. You can often request free shipping or use discount coupons if you buy trampolines along with several accessories. - 16887
