Rewarding Careers In Dance

By Peggy Ryersen

Although art comes in many forms, one of the most active and compelling is known as performance dance. Making the decision to follow a career in this type of dancing is bold, because it is more than just a job. It is a way of life. However, it is a career move that can also be very rewarding. Students who are serious about dance usually stay in this field for the rest of their lives, but may switch to different areas of the job if situations change. The following areas are those where students who were at first dancers were able to enter.

Dancers

Dancers are the performers and do the work for shows. They may or may not be involved in creative process of the steps, moves and ideas of the production. Many dancers become teachers or choreographers while still involved in dance. There are several top-rated schools of theatre and dance scattered throughout the nation that offer a feel into the dimension of dance as a future career and many other areas that blend.

Artistic Director

The person responsible for directing the dancers and setting up the artistic vision of a show is known as the artistic director. More often than not, the choreographer and artistic director is one and the same person. However, as a choreographer it is also necessary to be able to create dances and teach dancers those different styles or moves.

Technical Careers in Dance

Behind the scenes of a show, there are crews of technicians at work. The production manager, for example, is responsible for coordinating several things necessary for the show, such as the lights and set. They are also responsible for the sound during the show when the stage manage makes calls related to lighting or sound and they also enable communication between the different performers. The time between scenes and shows is short and therefore the technicians, including lighting experts and stage hands, have to work in a tightly planned schedule.

Administrative Careers in Theatre

There are many ways to work in the theater administrative. Being involved in this area will allow you to help the dance performances increase popularity and merit by filling out paperwork in order to receive public grants, work on public relations and also by doing research on the ways to involve the community in the performances. An administrator can also be in charge of fundraisers for the performances. Most dancers are even willing to travel and put on shows in order to advertise an upcoming performance or to demonstrate their own abilities.

Documentary Careers

What better job to have than to videotape or take exciting pictures of dancers in action for documentaries and specials, publications and promotion? Dance notators are also necessary for reconstructing older works. The two main forms of dance notation are Laban and Benesh. And then there are critics, every dancer's nightmare. Their presence felt in a crowd, ready to give their own opinion about the company or a particular player. A current or past dancer has to be the best critic in the world knowing every emotion, every move and every mistake made during a debut performance.

If your dream career has been to dance and you have done what you love there are other branches of dancing such as being an instructor, which many dancers do, to stay in the business. This can be quite rewarding to see and help young children pursue their dream, should that be the case. - 16887
