In 1977, in one of his most outstanding roles, Travolta played Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever. This film came out at the peak of the disco era and it played a major part in that time. In another exceptionally well-liked film from those times, John Travolta starred as Buford "Bud" Uan Davis, a small-town cowboy who goes to Houston to work and live. While in Houston, he starts hanging out at a area bar called "Gilley's" that is own by the well-known singer, Mickey Gilley.

He meets a young cowgirl, "Sissy" played by Debra Winger and the tale follows his love affair with Sissy and how he attempts to win a competition for riding a mechanical bull. Mechanical bulls were quite prevalent for some time after that film. This motion picture can often still be seen on cable even now. John Travolta then had a few box office disasters and it was actually many years before he had a different hit and became famous again.

However, by 1994 Travolta had again caught the eye of the public by starring in the popular movie, "Pulp Fiction" as Vincent Vega, a mob hitman. The movie also starred Samuel L. Jackson, Ving Rhames and Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino directed it. The film was a enormous box office success and also achieved critical acclaim.

John Travolta was once more nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor in a leading role for Pulp Fiction, however again he lost out, this time to Tom Hanks for "Forrest Gump".
