Unearth The Best Of A Few Great Actors

By Alice S Stewart

Each person has their own opinion on great actors and great movies. Nobody is more right or more wrong because it is just an opinion nevertheless it is fun to have favorites and enjoy. Some actors have enormous talent, and some actors are easy on the eyes and then there are the actors that are both. We like some actors more for what they do off the screen than onscreen, as some of them are great individuals who use their fame and fortune to help others and the world.

Tom Hanks is an remarkable talent. It is rather outrageous that he got his start in a goofy TV show called "Bosom Buddies". Later on he played an amazing role as Andrew Beckett, a gay lawyer who was infected by the AIDS virus and took on his own conservative law firm for firing him because of the fear that they may also contract the disease. Tom won his first Academy Award for that role in 1993.

Tom Hanks is only the second actor ever to win back-to-back Academy Awards as he again took home the Oscar the next year 1994 for his moving portrayal of Forrest Gump. The only other actor to do that was Spencer Tracy in 1937 and 1938. Tom has also entertained us with other wonderful movies but the list is too long to cover.

Brad Pitt has been known for his pretty boy good looks since he first came on the scene in the 1991 film "Thelma and Louise". On the contrary he hasn't always played the role of the good-looking boy. If you remember "Seven" and "Twelve Monkeys" both from 1985 you know what I mean. While the tabloid press seems to take his personal life and overshadow his movie roles, what is the most admirable thing about Brad Pitt is his vow to humanitarian causes throughout the world. He continuously donates hefty sums of his riches to help people that are less fortunate.

Brad Pitt founded the "Make It Right Foundation" to assist the people of New Orleans following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. The idea was to be a catalyst for the redevelopment of the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans by building homes that were reasonably priced, sustainable and true to the culture of New Orleans. The goal was to accomplish it quickly so that the residents could return as soon as possible. Here is where he has had true accomplishment.

Which reminds me of another great actor who we lost just this past year. Paul Newman passed away on September 26, 2008. During his life he entertained us with a lot of great movies including the "Road to Perdition" in 2002, "The Color Of Money" from 1986 and "Absence of Malice" from 1981. He also had the leading role in the well-known favorite "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" from clear back in 1969. Needless to say, he was also in many other wonderful movies, too.

However it is his philanthropy that we can all admire. In 1982 with a associate he created a line of food products that he dubbed "Newman's Own". It started with simply a salad dressing and quickly expanded to other products including pasta sauce, lemonade, popcorn, salsa and more. When he started the company he established that all of the profits generated after taxes would be donated to charity. In early 2006, Newman's Own had donated over $250 million.

Our favorite movies and favorite actors and actresses may change from time to time. We may love them for their flair or for other reasons but now that we can download full length, high quality movies from the Internet instantly we don't have to miss any more of the movies that we desire to see. - 16887
