Learning Digital Photography: Advice For Beginners

By Gary Nugent

Taking up digital photography can be a fun pursuit, but it's worth a little time to learn more about what's involved before you start committing funds to it (photography can be an expensive hobby).

To start with, you need to learn a few techniques in order to get great photos. Then you should also learn about the different types of photographic equipment. That is equally as important.

To enjoy photography as a hobby, the easiest way to start is to get a digital camera. Why? Because it's simply the most convenient route to achieving good results. With a digital camera, the number of pictures you can take is no longer limited by the number of rolls of film that you need to carry.

Digital photography provides a way for hobbyists to continue with their hobby until their camera's memory card is full. Today's camera memory cards can store hundreds of high resolution photos (compared to a roll of film's 36 exposures).

Digital cameras usually provide a number of pre-set modes for taking pictures (landscapes, portraits, sports, etc) that the beginner can use until they learn how to take greater control of the camera.

In digital photography, mistakes may not be as costly since most digital cameras allow you to take a considerable amount of shots without having to incur the expense of film. And with digital cameras, it is easier to get prints from your photos. All you will need is a PC and a printer in order to get prints. It may even be easier for you to send copies online anywhere on the world.

To learn more about photography, you should think about signing up for a photography course. There, you'll be taught the basic techniques used in taking pictures, along with more advanced techniques that aren't emulated by camera pre-sets. Most involve some course work in taking various types of photo which are then critiqued so you'll discover what you did wrong, and what you did right.

You can also learn how to best use your digital camera given certain lighting conditions and weather. This will greatly improve the shots that you will be getting, now that you have a pretty good idea on how each shot can be set under ideal conditions.

Digital photography can be an amazing hobby. It will train your eye to see rather than simply look. And, if you carry a camera with you, you'll find many more photographic opportunities presenting themselves to you. Not only will you become proficient in taking stunning photographs but you'll also discover that the world looks more vivid through a true photographic eye. - 16887
