Kidd

By Denise I Smithson

Generally considered one of the best players in the NBA, Dallas Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd is known by teammates, opponents and fans as a formidable player. He led the New Jersey Nets to two consecutive NBA finals in 2003 and 2003 before joining up with the Mavericks.

He started his NBA Career with the Dallas Mavericks, went to play for Phoenix, and was traded to New Jersey before returning back to Dallas in February, 2008. In April, 2008, he achieved his 100th career triple-double in the final regular season game.

The eldest of six children growing up in San Francisco, Kidd spent a lot of his youth playing on the public courts of nearby Oakland, often playing with NBA All-Star Gary Payton. To this day the two speak fondly of their time coming up on the public courts of the Bay area.

While in high school, Kidd was ranked the top high school player in the country, earning the Naismith Award. He stayed close to his native San Francisco, attending college at UC-Berkeley. He was a finalist for the Wooden Award as well as another Naismith while in college and in 1994, entered the NBA draft. When he left his college team, his #5 jersey was retired.

He has been a 9 time NBA All-Star and a member of the All-NBA First team in 1999 through 2002 and again in 2004. Additionally, he has been on the 1995 NBA All-Rookie First Team, won the 2003 NBA Skills Challenge Championship and made the All Defensive First and Second teams every year between 1999 and 2007.

In 2008, Jason Kidd was on the 2008 Olympic Gold Medal winning US Men's Basketball team, along with other basketball greats, who went undefeated. In USA Basketball, he has an undefeated record of 56-0 including exhibition games. He has brought home a total of five gold medals, in his Olympic participations of 2000 and 2008 games.

As amazing as his basketball career has been, his personal life has been rocky at times. He was arrested and pled guilty to charges of domestic abuse in 2001. Kidd entered counseling, anger management courses and quit drinking; he later reconciled with his wife.

In 2007 he filed for divorce from his wife, claiming jealousy, paranoia and threats to report fabricated abuse charges. His wife counter filed on the grounds of abuse. They have since divorced, but have three children together.

In 2008, it was found that Jason Kidd and his girlfriend, the model Hope Dworaczyk were expecting a child of their own.

While he may have had personal problems, Kidd's record on the court is indisputable. Kidd is one of two players in the NBA to amass a career scoring total of more than 14,000 points, 9,000 assists and 6,600 rebounds. Jason Kidd is also (along with Wilt Chamberlain and Magic Johnson) one of only three players in NBA history who has averaged triple-doubles in multiple playoff games. In fact, he is one of the league's all-time leaders on double triples, behind only Oscar Robertson and Magic Johnson - it should be no surprise that Kidd was named the USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year in 2007.

Jason Kidd has set milestones during his career with the NBA and the USA Olympic teams. He is an active community service promoter in the Dallas area, sponsoring programs for youth in the community. - 16887
