TVs: How To Pick A New Television

By Milrika Ekilski

When comparing TVs for the purpose of selecting a new television for your home, there is a lot more to look at than just the price for the set. You need to decide on the price and the brightness rating. You should consider the size of the set and who the manufacturer is. The resolution is a critical feature as is the contrast radio and connectivity.

If you want to enjoy the best clarity of a high-definition product including a plasma television or blu-ray DVD, make certain the television has a resolution of 1080 pixels. Older televisions have 720 pixels resolution, even those considered high definition. High resolution televisions will require a purchase price of about 50 percent higher than 720 pixel resolution televisions.

The size of the television set that you select is in direct proportion to the cost of the television. Check the viewing area so that the set doesn't overpower the limited space. A set with 720 pixels is adequate for the average viewing distance of nine feet. If you go larger in size and larger in resolution, you can still enjoy the television set.

A television that uses LCD technology needs a contrast ratio that is a minimum of 5000:1. This means the whitest white pixels are much brighter than the darkest black pixels. In a set sized larger than 42 inches, you will need a higher contrast ratio in order to have good viewing experiences. Low contrasts means that the whites are dull and the blacks appear gray.

If you plan to run anything else besides your television set by using the TV console, you will need to have good connectivity. You should prepare for both standard and high definition input. If you want to use the television with your laptop, you will need a VGA connection.

If you are trying to watch television in a sunlit room and you can't see what's on the screen, chances are that brightness level is too low. A set should be rated at 550 cd/m2 for best viewing. Review the rating on the sets you are considering so you won't be disappointed by muddy pictures.

The manufacturers of TVs that you are comparing will be important too. Internet review of various sets and manufacturers will give you information about plus and minus features in many different sets. Whether you choose LCD, LED or plasma televisions, go for the most features for the lowest price. - 16887
