The gym has become the modern day hub of health and fitness, attracting people who are willing to put in the hard yards to stay healthy and well-toned. In the last decade, we have witnessed a massive increase in number of gyms and fitness centres across towns and cities, all having sophisticated equipment to take care of their clients. They have an ever increasing number of patrons, and the list doesn't just include body builders or sportsmen. There is an increased thrust on the need for staying fit, so people of all genders and from all age groups and professions are enrolling themselves as members of gyms.

However, you must be careful of centres that have come up just to profit from the modern craze for fitness, as they can have a detrimental effect on your health owing to their lack of right equipment and facilities. Hence it is essential to keep a few key points in mind while choosing the correct gym for yourself.

Your motivation levels can be notably affected if the gym is located far off from your office or residence. Thus, selecting a gym that is nearby is very important. The overall environment in the gym, which includes the mindset of the staff, the design, air-conditioning etc, must also be considered. The interiors must give ample space and comfort as well. The standard of the gym in terms of modern equipment and services must be verified as working on sub standard equipment can be very risky.

A gym having additional services like sauna baths should be a preferred choice. To make sure that kids can be looked after during their parents' workout sessions, some gyms also have day care facilities inside their premises.

Another important factor is whether the gym provides personal training facility or not. Personal training is an excellent way to get yourself a customized fitness routine and to stay motivated. The more focused, committed and accessible a personal trainer is, greater are the chances of the member getting good advice and training.

A gym whose membership fee exceeds your budget or seems to be much higher given the services it offers must not be selected. You may go for long term packages that would notably cut down your expenditure on membership, but don't fall for a lock-in period that you are not sure you will use the service for.
