The History of Justin Boots

By Dustin Williams

H.J. Justin began his careers originally as a simple boot repairman. In 1879 he left in home in Lafayette, Indiana and ended up in Spanish Fort, Texas. There he started up his own company out of his very own home making books.

The railroad brought a lot of changes to many cities in America, it also brought H.J. out of Spanish Fort to Nocona, Texas where he felt that he had a greater opportunity to work with a bigger market. His wife Annie Justin was right there at his side helping him with the work by making him what is called a 'fit kit', which had an instruction chart and tape measure all for custom fit boots. H.J. was able to hire a sort of traveling sales team that would carry these kits around.

Later, H.J.'s own sons came to work for him and they renamed the company H.J. Justin and Sons. By 1910 26 states as well as Mexico, Canada, and Cuba were all selling H.J. Justin boots. After the death of H.J. the company was taken over by their sons and a new headquarters in Forth Worth, Texas was named.

In 1948, John Justin, Jr. purchased controlling interest in the company. It wasn't long before H.J. Justin & Sons was growing again. In 1968, the company made a deal with Acme Brick, another Fort Worth company with pioneering roots, to form Justin Industries. Nocona Boot Company became part of Justin Industries when John Jr. purchased the controlling shares from his aunt, Enid Justin, in 1981. Three years later, Chippewa Shoe Company was added to the Justin family of brands. And in 1990, Justin Industries purchased competitor Tony Lama Boots after years of intense rivalry.

In 2000 Justin Boots was taken over by Berkshire Hathaway. With all that Berkshire could offer, they were able to be given strong marketing and have grown again to become the legend that they once were.
