Poker had been on TV since the 70's, but it was a small audience. This was because not having the knowledge of what the players had, it was difficult to understand what the players tactics were. This brilliant idea made watching poker events on television massively more popular.

The next event that an indispensable in causing the rapid expansion of poker was the start of online poker. The original internet poker room was up and running in 1998. This sets the stage for the last piece to the puzzle. When Chris Moneymaker beats some of the top pros in the game to win the world series of poker Main Event in 2003, we see poker explode. Gaining his entry thru a $40 online poker room satellite, then winning, starts the avalanche of poker popularity.

The combination of the pocket cam creating a large audience seeing poker on TV, and the rise of online poker adding to the number of poker players, had set the stage for the "Moneymaker" effect. Everyone seeing an internet, rookie, succeed against some of the best players in the world, poker boomed.
