Equestrian Helmet " Designed for an Important Purpose

By Lisa Blackstone

An equestrian helmet is a head covering of hard material, such as leather, metal or plastic, worn by rider to protect the head. It is the most important piece of safety gear when riding a horse. It is designed to protect riders head from injuries in case of a fall. One of the most common accidents that riders experience in horse riding is falling off a horse, which can also lead to death.

Horseback riding-related accidents seldom occur, however, when they do, they can be very severe. This is why safety gears like helmets are required to be used by riders in horse riding sports and competitions. All riders, whenever near or on the horse, are recommended to wear helmet. Some states in the US even require by law that riders under the age of 14 must wear helmets at all times when horseback riding.

Equestrian helmets are designed with materials that absorb impact of a fall or blow. They have a hard shell on the outside, which is sometimes covered with cloth for a more attractive look. They have impact-resistant resin or plastic on the inside as well as headliners, which is a fabric that is designed to keep your head dry and cool. They also have padding and ventilation for comfort and a harness to keep the helmet attached on the head at all times.

An equestrian helmet is designed in such a way that its protection is evenly distributed around the head. Unlike the other sports helmet, which are designed to protect only the front and back of the head, it covers more of a persons head. An equestrian helmets must meet one or more specific safety standards before it can be used in competitions.

It is important that the helmet you use perfectly fits your head so it doesnt move or fly off when you are horse riding. When buying a helmet, try fitting several helmets until you find the right size for you. Wear it on your head and test it by putting your hands on the side of your head and move the helmet back and forth. You will know if its the right size if there is very little movement or give.

Wearing the equestrian helmet on your head doesnt mean you are already protected. One very important factor that you must remember is to fasten the helmet properly. This is when the harnesses or straps come in handy. You have to adjust the straps in such a way that the helmet is securely fastened on your head.

Make sure that your equestrian helmet is properly placed on your head by moving your head back and forth. The helmet should not slip forward over your eyes when you move. Also, your scalp should move with your helmet. Your helmet should also sit no more than one inch above your eyebrows.

When buying a helmet, make sure that it has an ASTM/SEI certified label on it. The label is a proof that the helmet is approved by the American Society for Testing and Materials. This means that the helmet has been appropriately tested for safety.

When riding a horse, the very first thing that you should remember is to wear your helmet. Keep in mind that horse activities carry an inherent danger and safety should be your primary concern. Equestrian helmets may sometimes be uncomfortable but it can prevent you from getting injured and even save your life. - 16887
