Picking a Good Credit Card for Vacations

By Matthew Kepnes

Everyone has a credit card that they use while they are traveling. Getting right one is extremely important because credit cards do more than just replace money- they also give us rewards. Everyone likes free stuff so it's important that you get free stuff from your card. But getting the right card will ensure you get the stuff that suits you the best and you get it the quickest. Here are some tips on how to get the most of out of your travel credit card.

Furthermore, make sure you pick a travel credit card where you have the chance to receive additional points. Most of the time you just get one point for every dollar spent. Many cards give you extra points when you shop at special retailers or, if it is a brand card, with that one brand. This way you gets you points quicker.

Most of the good cards have fees. Fees range from $45-$80 dollars. If you are a frequent flier, you might want to consider getting a fee based card. Fee cards give you a better rewards scheme. You can accumulate rewards faster, you get better access to services and special offers, and better fraud protection.

Finally, don't forget to read the fine print. Are there are reward blackout dates, a fee structure, taxes, or other things the credit card company might try to sneak in there. Businesses don't give away anything for free so for most cards they will try to sneak in some service charge. Compare the cards to make sure you pick one that doesn't.

If you are a frequent traveler, consider getting a fee based card. The fees can go as high as a few hundred dollars a year but the reward schemes are a lot better and if you travel frequently, you'll pay for the fee in no time. You'll get reward quicker, access to better perks, and more special offers. As a frequent traveler, this is your best option.

For those who only care about price and not brand loyalty, a general card would be best. You will still get points for free flights and discounts as well as cash back but you wouldn't get any of the elite benefits. However, by getting a general travel rewards card you would have access to a wider range of brands and companies than if you had a brand specific card. - 16887
