Hustle, Loyalty, Respect

By Jacky Lee

A multiple time US champion, Tag Team Champion, World Heavyweight Champion, and Royal Rumble winner, John Cena, real name John Fleix Anthony Cena, also sometimes credited as a hip hope star and movie actor, is currently the hottest professional wrestling in America working under the Raw Brand of the World Wrestling Entertainment.

Graduated in 1998 from Springfield College with a physiology degree, John Cena is born in West Newbury, Massachusetts on April 23, 1977. Cena was an Division III All-American in football while in college. Before his profession in wrestling, he worked as a chauffeur in a limousine company while also being billed as a bodybuilder.

"The Champ" first real wrestling experience was under a semi-robotic character known as the Prototype at Ultimate Pro Wrestling's sub division Ultimate University. He was then placed in WWE's development wrestling company, Ohio Valley Wrestling before being drafted by the WWE in 2001 for his brute force and charming personality.

John Cena surprised many fans and well established wrestling superstar Kurt Angle when he nearly pinned the Olympic Champion by kicking out of the dreadful Angel Slam and outlasting the angle lock submission in his first WWE event. This event promoted him to become the new fan favorite in WWE and he was soon facing proven heels such as Chris Jericho. However, after little achievement, Cena decided to turn into a heel character who was rapping and cutting promos and interviews, while calling himself the "Doctor of Thuganomics". This character was soon rewarded with a destiny with then WWE champion, Brock Lesnar. Though Cena lost to Lesnar, he gained a lot of respect and earned the characteristics of being resilience and tough.

John Cena largest payday at last arrived on the night of Wrestlemania 21 when he overwhelmed loudmouth John "Bradshaw" Layfield and became the WWE World Champion. His ongoing feud with JBL ended when Eric Bischoff drafted him to his Monday Night Raw. Upon his arrival at WWE's flagship TV show, he rapidly made an impact by temporally retiring Y2J Chris Jericho. "The Champ" once again feuded with Olympic Champion Kurt Angle in the following months. In a submission match with Angle, fans witnessed Cena's new wrestling submission move called STF, or STFU. After an injury, Cena took a few months to film "The Marine". Before the injury and upon retuning to WWE, Cena started hearing boos toward him from many wrestling fans. Many were worn-out of seeing Cena billed as the top attraction week in and week out. Furthermore, other fans were booing him because of his limited wrestling repertoire performed in the ring.

John Cena put up one of his best years in 2006 when he started a long and heated rivalry with Edge and then headlined Wrestlemania with Triple H. He would later defend the title against the widely popular Rob Van Damn. Despite all these, the negative reactions from fans only got worse. "you suck" and "F U Cena" chants and be heard in arenas around the country directing at Cena.

Despite many negative reactions from the fans, WWE continue to push Cena because of his drawing power. "The Champ" and Shawn Michaels would headline Wrestlemania in 2007. WWE further proved their faith in Cena's ability when they put him in a rematch with "Mr. Wrestlemania" HBK in a classic one hour long match on Monday Night Raw the following week after Wrestlemania. Luckily for Cena, he still have many "chain soldiers" or fans supporting him and cheering him on despite all the boos and negative reactions.

Throughout the last few years, Cena has starred in two action flicks, "12 Rounds" and "The Marine', while recording his own entrance song in the album "You Can't See Me". No matter if you are booing or cheering for him the next time he does the military salute to the audience or shouting "The Champ is Here", there is little doubt that John Cena is the biggest draw and most emotional driven wrester in the industry today. - 16887
