Activity Holidays : What To Consider

By Gary Ferdinand

We look at what to take into account before booking an activity holiday in this installment of our activity holidays guide.

There exist activity holidays that are available for people that have different interests, fitness levels, and experience. Usually no or little experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and a willingness to try something new.

Your level of fitness is half of the equation, along with your willingness. You have to know what you are capable of doing, since the fitness level you have will have a lot do with the activities that you chose. To be able to enjoy yourself they must match each other. Since you guide/instructor is only there to help, it is not right for you to take a trip that will slow other patrons down, or even possibly put their lives in danger.

Age limits are rarely in place but you should contact the activity holiday company prior to booking if you feel your age might be a hindrance to performing an activity. As for disabilities, these may or may not be barrier to participation, normally an activity holiday company will find a workable compromise but with some activities this may not be possible.

A rating for each activity is usually put up on websites as well as brochures, for every trip that is offered. These are usually leisurely, moderate, or intense. Pay attention to these as they're shown for your benefit and are based on the experiences of past holiday-goers. You shouldn't choose a moderate or intense one only because taking a leisurely one will make you appear weak, only do so if you really are up for the challenge.

Other important factors to take into consideration when deciding upon which activity holiday to book are the level of comfort in terms of accommodation, traveling, available facilities, temperature range and likely weather conditions, and the remoteness of the area, likely terrain, altitude and access to emergency services.

Remember that there is an element of risk in all activities and that although tour operators spend a long time researching destinations, routes, ground operations and equipment, and nothing tends to be untested, your safety can't be guaranteed. - 16887
