Festival Menagerie In Alabama

By Ian Kleine

Alabama may sound kinda boring to some people. But it is actually chock slew of different and varied festivals that you'd never imagine anyone could fit so many in one year. Alabamans know this fact and they sure are heck proud of it. The biggest attraction to boot is the Mardi Gras, an international festival of color, fun, dance and music. Did you know that it actually started in Alabama and not in New Orleans? The festival is slated right after Easter, which is a good time to get people hyped up for happy times and dancing. Mardi Gras is visited by people around the state, and is a good opportunity for you to get to know the state more and more. There are balls, and street dancing, and floats and food booths (cant live without them). Cuisine from varied regions culminate in this arena of festivities.

The National Shrimp Festival can also be found here in Alabama, held on October at the time when they be a-plenty. More than hundreds of thousands of food lovers, gastronomes, and critics make the faithful journey to shrimp-mecca Alabama to immerse themselves in this smorgasbord of shrimp, art and entertainment. After all, shrimp festivals also deal with anything related to shrimps. This includes other food as well.

There are also Alabama food festivals aside from shrimp. One of particular notice is the state favorite: peanuts. Dothan is well known for the peanuts it produces (supplying a goodly population of the American people). Thus, the largest peanut-themed festival is also held here, around the season of fall. At least close to more than a hundred thousand visitors also flock the area for a chance to be part of this "nutty" festival.

Garage and yard sales are also popular around here. Quite frankly, Alabama boasts the world record for "World's Longest Yard Sale". And that's quite a feat. This yard sale actually draws buyers not only from distant neighborhoods, but from even countries around the world. Talk about marketing and all that!

The whole area spans a good 654 miles, all tables and tents. Should you want to finish browsing everything, you'd have to take lodging at the nearest cabins, hotels or camp it out for the night. It's a pretty good idea actually. You get to see the country side AND you get to chance on some bargains too. With a whole lot of tables to browse on, you'd definitely see what you're looking for. - 16887
