Gymnastics San Antonio- Is It For Me?

By Jim Antonio

Gymnastics San Antonio is a very artistic sport that requires strength, endurance and muscle coordination. It is becoming a more popular leisure sport. To perform gymnastics at a competitive position it requires intense dedication, perseverance, and to be all around fit.

Gymnastics has been defined as a very impacted no contact sport. With this being stated, people still get injured in gymnastics due to horrible landings, falling, and even falling on equipment. Skilled gymnasts who press themselves to the limit tend to be the people who get hurt the most. Usually due to long hard practices which they have raised the bar so high for themselves and attempt to do the dangerous routines.

In the United States, female gymnastics has become one of the quickest growing sports in the last ten plus years. Traditionally, people enter into this sport at a young age. Like all sports that evolve, gymnastics is not immune to this evolution. Equipment today allows female gymnast to perform at a much faster rate than ever before. One such example is if you take a female gymnast of the early 1970's, you would find an eighteen year old female who was 5'2" and weighed approximately 105 lbs. Fast forward twenty years and that same female gymnast is now sixteen, 4' 9", and weighs only 91 lbs.

The pressure that is put on these gymnasts has put alot of stress and determination to keep their weight low. This is known that gymnasts will copy well known female gymnasts. The studies have let us know that seventy-five percent of female gymnasts has tried or is doing an drastic weight control system(not eating, vomiting, counting calories, overly exercising, and pills). These are a few of the causes to eating disorders.

Long lasting life injuries that are common in these young athletes is over stressed muscles and injuries. Injuries that include the shoulder area, to the wrist, back area, and all due to the fact that these athletes bodies are still growing and developing. Because of the comprehensiveness of these routines and how flexible they need to be, joint disease is prevalent. Male gymnast don't have to worry as much as their routines deal mostly with strength rather than how flexible they are.

Now that there is an understanding of the ins and outs of youth gymnastics, then the type of gymnastics in which you choose to participate in would be an ideal place to start. Artistic gymnastics is one of the most known styles. For the women's events, it typically involves the uneven parallel bars, vault, balance beam, and floor exercise. For the men, similar to the women's events, they have parallel bars, vault, balance beam, floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, and the high bar.

There are many other styles of gymnastics such as Rhythmic gymnastics (that is for women), Tumbling and Trampolining, Aerobic gymnastics, Display gymnastics, and Team gymnastics. Over the years gymnastics has been more involved in many cheerleading routines at all of their levels.

With several sports, gymnastics San Antonio is a very dedicated, and highly broadened and learned skill that could take a gymnast to several competitions all over the world with the right support and the right coaches. - 16887
