Top 10 Non Sporting Trophies and Awards

Today trophies and awards are presented to people for a variety of different reasons. As well as those that are received for sporting achievements like gold, silver and bronze Olympic medals. There are various non sporting ones that can be presented as well. Below we take a look at what we consider to be the top 10 non sporting trophies and awards given today.

1. Academy Awards - One of the most easily recognizable this award is also known as the Oscar and looks like a human. Presented each year usually in March to those involved in the world of movies. The awards are given out by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and are one of the oldest ceremonies where media awards are presented.

2. Hugo Awards - Named after Hugo Gernsbeck who founded science fiction magazine Amazing Stories is presented each year to those who have produced in the previous year the best fantasy or science fiction works. This of the top 10 non sporting trophies and awards given out has been presented each year since 1955.

3. Victoria Cross - There are many medals that military personnel in the UK and the Commonwealth Countries can be presented with but the highest decoration that has been awarded is the Victoria Cross. This is the one that will be presented to such members of the armed forces who have shown extreme bravery when faced with their enemy. The medal was introduced in 1856 and since then awarded to 1,353 individuals. However, after the Second World War only a further 13 of these medals have been awarded to members of the British and Australian army.

4. Military Cross - This medal will be presented to military personnel in British or Commonwealth armed forces when they have carried out an act or acts of exemplary gallantry when against an enemy. There have been several times since 1979 when this actual medal has been awarded to military personnel posthumously.

5. George Cross - This non sporting trophy is one that can be awarded to both military personnel and civilians who live not only in the UK but are Commonwealth citizens also. It is the non combative counterpart of the Victoria Cross and will be presented to people who perform an act of bravery at any time.

6. Queens Gallantry Medal - This medal has only been instituted since 1974 and has replaced the Order of the British Empire for Gallantry, the Colonial Police Medal for Gallantry and the British Empire Medal for Gallantry. Just like all the medals we discuss in this article this one is awarded for exemplary acts of bravery both by civilian and military personnel.

7. BAFTA's - This is an award presented in the UK each year just as with the Oscars. But covers not just films but also television. The award is shaped like a theatrical mask rather than a human and was designed in 1955 by Mitzi Cunliffe an American sculptor.

8. BRIT Awards -More commonly referred to as the BRITS each year a ceremony takes place where the awards are presented to musicians from all genres by the British Phonographic Industry. It is a ceremony not only people enjoy to watch to see their favorite singer or band perform but also to see how badly the presenters present it.

9. Nobel Peace Prize -Along with the Oscars this is one of the most well recognized of the top 10 non sporting trophies and awards that can be given today. Every year the Nobel committee sits down and creates a short list of potential recipients of this prize. The prize bequeathed by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel has been given to some truly great people including Nelson Mandela.

10. The Man Booker Prize - This is one of the top 10 non sporting trophies and awards presented each year for the best original full length novel to be written in the English language. The candidates who can be presented with this prize must be a citizen either of Ireland, Zimbabwe or the Commonwealth of Nations. Even those who don't get awarded with this prize are happy to be even nominated for it. - 16887
