Creative Picnic Ideas for Cold Weather

By Michael Normski

Don't shut yourself indoors just because it's cold out - winter provides endless possibilities for creative outdoor fun. Just keep yourself warm with some delicious food and beverages by centering your traditional outdoor activities around a fun cold weather picnic.

Treat the kids to some hot cocoa in a winter wonderland. Sledding, making snowmen, having snowball fights, and ice skating are winter traditions beloved by children and adults alike. Fill thermoses with hot potato soup, creamy macaroni and cheese, chili, baked beans or other kid-friendly meals that will help warm them up after their fun in the snow.

Unless you've got a lot of portable outdoor seating, the best way to hold a picnic party in your yard is to ask guests to bring along their own picnic blankets, folding chairs or other comfortable seating. If you're on a tight budget, ask them to either bring their own picnic baskets full of food for themselves and their families or to bring a potluck dish. If you like the idea of a potluck, you may want to think of a theme - for example, Italian or traditional Christmas fare.

Create opportunities for new traditions to come to life. Thanksgiving is about more than just food, or pilgrims and Indians - it's about your gratitude for the wonderful people in your life, building memories, and creating traditions that will be lovingly repeated again and again. There are tons of fun fall activities for kids that they can enjoy right in your backyard, or you can challenge them to be more creative - provide them with materials to stuff a scarecrow, or put on a Thanksgiving play.

You could even create a spectacular edible centrepiece such as a mini Christmas tree made from a Styrofoam base, toothpicks and sugary green and red gum drops. Have a beverage table set up in a central location with hot cocoa, cider, and other warm drinks. If you like, you could lay out a buffet of small finger foods or platters of delicious comfort food such as sliced ham, dinner rolls, mixed veggies, and glazed sweet potato slices.

Surprise your family or spouse with a picnic in your living room, complete with a cozy picnic blanket and beautiful picnic basket. You can make it feel like summer for the day, turning up the heat and arranging houseplants around your picnic blanket. With some candles, music and a bottle of champagne you can instantly turn it into a romantic experience.

Gather 'round the fire with a hot beverage for some good conversation with friends and family. Your Thanksgiving party certainly doesn't have to be spent in front of the television. After dinner, once you've stuffed yourselves to the max, a hot mug of coffee or cider will be a beautiful thing as you look at the smiling faces around you and enjoy the company.

Fire pits, chimineas or campfires allow you to bring the party outdoors without getting too cold. Just make sure you have enough outdoor seating and perhaps a few cosy, warm picnic blankets to keep everyone happy and comfortable. - 16887
