The Music Man: Peerless Preston reprises his Broadway role as sales man con guy Prof. Harold Hill who captivates an Iowa town with visions of uniformed marching band. The Gazebo: An unconventional comedy about death and a porch gazebo. The part players McGiver and Merande make this film work, however the megastars perform admirably as well. Cast includes Glenn Ford, Debbie Reynolds, Carl Reiner, Doro Merande, John McGiver, and Mabel Albertson. 101 minutes, 1959)
For Love of Ivy: A family desires to keep their servant, so they find her a man to keep her happy. The film is a ho-hum black romance at best. Cast includes Sidney Poitier, Abbey Lincoln, Guy Bridges, Leon Bibb, Nan, Martin, Lauri Peters, and Carroll O'Connor. (102 minutes, 1968)
Cry the Beloved Country: This is a moving redo of the 1951 film based on Alan Paton's rejoiced novel, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in 1946, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his errant child. At the same time prosperous landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been killed. We see phenomenal work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes, 1995)
The Guyver: All-American Armstrong, contaminated by an extraterrestrial device, finds that he is an armored superhero, an excellent thing, except that virtually everyone else in the film might turn into a frightening beast, like CIA representative Hamill, who turns into a large cockroach. Awkward clumps of humor only make the contrived plot appear even more mindless. (92 minutes, 1992)
Big Shots: So-so adolescent venture in reference to an ignorant white boy and streetwise city black that come together and find themselves hired as hit men. Cast includes Ricky Busker, Darius McCrary, Robert Delight, Robert Prosky, Jerzy Skolimowski, and Paul Winfield. (90 minutes, 1987)
The Black Orchid: A concocted soap style film of bumbling businessman (Quinn) courting mafia widow (Loren) and the complication of persuading their youngsters that matrimony can make all their lives better. Cast includes Sophia Loren, Anthony Quinn, Ina Balin, Jimmie Baird, (Peter) Mark Richman, Naotni Stevens, and Frank Puglia. (1959 minutes, 96)
Following: A fascinating ultra low spending limit precursor to Nolan's ?Souvenir?, another nonlinear tale in regards to a youthful aimless guy who plans to follow individuals, just for the hell of it until one of his "subjects" turns the tables and tempts him into his own world, where he pillages vacant apartments and invades his victim?s lives. Foxfire: An adaptation of a Joyce Carol Oates novel in reference to 4 high school gals who form a clique after an enigmatic lady drifter comes to town. The cast tries however they're finished in by a terrible script that plays like an R-rated B movie. Cast includes Hedy Burress, Angelina Jolie, Jenny Lewis, Jenny Shimizu, Sarah Rosenberg, Peter Facinelli, Streak Mihok, Cathy Moriarty, Richard Beymer, and John Diehl. (102 minutes, 1996)
