Super Bowl Contenders in 2009

By Ryan Mulligan

While many differ in their opinions as to who the best NFL team in each conference may be, just about everyone can agree that there are a few teams that seem to stand above the rest. Football has been exciting so far, and the rest of the season will be very interesting.

Let's look at each conference and determine who the favorites may be. This is all in good fun, and I could very well be wrong about both predictions.

The first team that deserves a mention is the Pittsburgh Steelers. While they were surprise losers to the Bears and the Bengals, they've since improved with some great football. Everything is clicking in Pittsburgh after a shaky start, and the team has its sights set on another Super Bowl win.

While things do look great in Pittsburgh, the Patriots have followed a similar course. A rough beginning to the season seems to have smoothed out, and New England is playing the dominant type of football that we all witnessed two seasons ago. The Denver Broncos have also started the season with a bang, and could very easily find themselves in the playoffs.

While all of these teams have been great, no AFC team has been as strong as the Colts. An incredibly efficient offense has dominated its opponents, thanks to the steady hand of Peyton Manning. Until the Colts lose, they're tops in the conference.

Let's look at the NFC next. Any conversation about the NFC has to start with the New Orleans Saints, still undefeated through eight weeks.

Riding the success of QB Drew Brees, the offense is unstoppable and strong enough to win just about every time they play, thanks to Brees. They beat the Giants at home pretty handily, making a bold statement in the process.

The Saints are the favorite to emerge in the NFC at the moment. However, they'll have to fight off some other teams playing great football. The Vikings and the Eagles could very well be just as strong, and the Cowboys are finally beginning to get things together. Looming not too far behind are the defending NFC champion Cardinals, and of course, the New York Giants. - 16887
