Compound Bows Compared To Other Types Of Bows

By Bart Icles

Archery is quickly emerging as one of the more engaging sports on the planet. It doesnt matter if you have been doing archery for many years, or if you are a newbie to the sport, you may be interested in the different types of bows on the market and how they are different from each other.

Each type of bow on the market has pretty much the same structure to it, but its the very small details that make big differences when it comes to different types of bows. Im going to talk about four different types of bows and how they differ from each other. These are the most common types of bows and you should be able to determine which type of bow is perfect for you.

Longbow: Longbows are the most basic form of bow used today. They are very simple and are made from a single, straight piece of wood. Basically, this is the type of bow you see in Robin Hood or in old medieval movies. These types of bows are shot without any aids and no sights. The bigger and longer the bow is, the more power you can get out of it. This type of bow is famous for being customized to the archer since they are cut to length to fit your body type and size.

Recurve Bow: The main thing that sets recurve bows apart from others is that the ends of the bow are curved away from the archer toward the target. This feature makes this type of bow much more powerful than the longbow. As mentioned above, the longbow is made from one piece of wood, well, the recurve bow is made out multiple pieces of wood that have been laminated together.

Another distinguishing feature of the recurve bow is the fact that it is made in three pieces. You have the body, which is also known as the riser and two detachable limbs that fit onto the end of the riser. Sometimes, you might even see a thin rod that is attached to the front of a recurve bow. That is used to stabilize the bow when shooting.

Compound Bow: The most popular bow today is known as the compound bow. This type of bow has on off centered pulley on each end. The pulleys are in place to provide more tension and more strength to the draw. Just like the recurve bow, the compound bow is short and the limbs are adjustable.

Composite Bow: The last bow on the list is the composite bow. This type of bow functions exactly like a longbow, but is classified as a composite bow because it is not made out of one piece of wood. Typically, there are three different layers of material tht is used when making a composite bow and that affects the action of the bow.

As you can clearly see, no matter what your style is, there is a bow that can fit your needs. - 16887
