Saltwater Fishing Gear: Starting Out

By Bob Smith

Saltwater fishing is different than fresh water fishing in a lake or stream. It's not only the fish but the saltwater fishing gear is different than freshwater gear. It's just common sense, if the fish are bigger you're going to need different gear.

When you go saltwater fishing you need not only skill but the knowledge and use of the proper equipment. If you're a freshwater fisherman , though the skills are similar the equipment differences mean you'll need some adjustment time to learn the in's and out's of the saltwater fishing gear.

Starting with the basics, you want a good rod. You want one in the middle, not the most expensive and not dirt cheap. The rod will set you back from $100 -200+. The least expensive rod is a mistake from the get go. You'll probably pick up some bad habits and no one will want it for resale when you're ready to move up to the next level.

The next piece of saltwater fishing gear is a good saltwater fishing reel. As you know saltwater is highly corrosive and eats at metal. Pay the money for a reel guaranteed to be saltwater corrosion resistant or treated. Graphite and aluminum are my choices.

Baitcasting and spinning are the main categories of saltwater fishing reels. Baitcasting reels are used for larger heavier fish, but requires a higher skill level. Spinning reels have a stationary spool making them easier to use. Choose the line to fit your reel and the type of fishing you intend to do. If youre just getting started with saltwater fishing then consider a combo, as the manufacturer attaches the right reel to the right rod.

It's a matter of personal decision whether you buy or make your own fly. Whatever your choice use high quality fly as fish aren't stupid. Poor quality fly attracts nothing.

If you're an experienced freshwater fisherman, you adapt quickly to saltwater fishing with the correct saltwater fishing gear. With the proper gear youll enjoy your fishing as you expand your skills to the saltwater. Saltwater fishing gear properly cared for will provide many years of enjoyable fishing. - 16887
